Italian vital records are not centralized in a single database. Every Comune — every municipality — maintains its own records, many of which have never been digitized. Requests for certificates must be submitted in writing in Italian, with full knowledge of the local administrative procedure. In many cases, the only way to retrieve a document is through physical presence at the archive.

Furthermore, for an Italian citizenship application, documents must be in a specific certified format, with apostille and official translation. A simple photocopy is not sufficient.
